Gavrilova and Karolina Pliskova out!
Today the J&T Banka Prague Open tournament lost two of its biggest stars.
First, early this morning Karolina Pliskova, the number 1 seed in the event, was forced to withdraw due to a right thigh injury. Yesterday afternoon, she won the Stuttgart Grand Prix and wasn’t able to recover in time to play her first round match in Prague. Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus will take her place in the draw.
Another player to suffer an early exit was Daria Gavrilova of Australia. She played her first round match against fellow Fed cup teammate Samantha Stosur. Gavrilova lost the first set 6:3, but bounced back in the next set winning it 6:4. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the 3rd set she injured her foot and was unable to continue her match.
Among the first round winners were Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic. The number 8 seed defeated Andrea Petkovic of Germany in straight sets.
The remaining first round matches will be played tomorrow. Spectators will have a chance to see Petra Kvitova, Barbora Strycova and last year’s champion Mona Barthel. Matches start at 11AM and entrance is free of charge.
