Mona Barthel suffers an early exit
J&T Banka Prague Open will have a new champion this year. Last year’s winner, Mona Barthel of Germany, wasn’t able to find the same sublime form that she showed last year. In her first round match, she faced Antonia Lottner, a fellow German, and was the clear favorite to win. Lottner had different plans, and started the match in fine form. She dictated play with her big serve and forehand, and forced Barthel to surrender the first set 6:0. The second set was much more competitive, but also went Lottner’s way, this time 7:5. In the second round Lottner will face Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania, who defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in straight sets.
Two other big upsets took place on center court, where Camila Giorgi of Italy defeated the number 5 seed, Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic. Giorgi’s power from the back of the court was too much for the crafty Czech today. She won the match in 3 sets 6:0 2:6 6:2.
In the last match of the day, Lucky Loser Jasmine Paolini of Italy, showed amazing defensive skills and proved to much to handle for Daria Kasatkina of Russia.
Other winners today include; Petra Kvitova who defeated Tereza Smitkova in straight sets and Kristyna Pliskova, last year’s finalist who beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.
Second round matches will be played tomorrow. Gates open at 10:00 am and play begins one hour later. Entry, as usual, is free of charge.
