Good day for the seeded players
It was a perfect day for the seeded players here at the J&T Banka Prague Open. All four seeded players, who advanced to the 2nd round by winning on Monday or Tuesday, were victorious again today.
Petra Kvitova, the highest seeded player left in the draw, stormed through her 2nd round match. In just under an hour, she defeated Natalia Vikhlyantseva, a young Russian who is very talented, but wasn’t able to handle Kvitova’s power from the back of the court.
Petra Kvitova will face another local seeded player, Katerina Siniakova, in the quarterfinal. Siniakova, the number eight seed, had a much more competitive 2nd round match, facing off against Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia. Both players experienced many ups and downs today, but it was the Czech who put together a solid 3rd set to win the match in 3 tight sets 6:4 3:6 6:3.
The other two seeded players played their matches on court number two. Mikhaela Buzarnescu of Romania, the seventh seed, defeated Antonia Lottner, a German qualifier, who won in the first round against defending champion Mona Barthel. The first set of the match was a one-woman show. The Romanian was relentless, not giving her opponent any chances, winning it easily 6:0. The second set was much more competitive but Buzarnescu held her nerves in check when it mattered most, winning it 7:5.
The last seeded player to advance to the quarterfinal was Zhang Shuai of China. The sixth seeded player defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse, a qualifier from Romania 6:4 6:4.
All quarterfinal matches will be played tomorrow. Gates open at 10:00 and matches will start at 11:00am. Entry is free of charge.
